How to care for your leatherwear Caring for your Leather Storage Store your pieces out of direct sunlight, in a dry place, and away from any heat source to prevent fading or drying out. Wipe any dust off with a clean cloth. Leather forms to gravity. It is skin, so it can stretch, scratch, curl, and crack if stored improperly. Allow leather to breath. Moisture or over-conditioning can lead to mold, mildew, or tarnishing.Try to store pieces as flat as possible, as a flat lay or on a hanger. Keep leather away from things that may be able to scratch it. Do not submerge or run leather under water. To clean your leathers, use Saddle Soap and a clean cloth. Do not rinse the soap off. Dry flat or hanging and away from any artificial heat source. Always condition after cleaning. Do not iron leather. To keep leather supple, apply leather conditioner after cleaning. Using mink oil will help protect it from salt stains. Use a dry soft bristle brush to remove any residue that appears from conditioning! All pieces from the Spill online shop are handcrafted to order, this can take a moment. My lead times are as follows*: 1-2 weeks for collars, leashes, and earrings 2-4 weeks for harnesses and cuffs 2-7 weeks for cut patterned pieces and belts Some pieces and colors within the same bracket have faster production times than others, if you are curious, feel welcome to ask in an email! *If an order is placed during Covid-19, these lead times could be subject to delay. Does Spill ship globally? I am in the process of setting up international shipping to some countries outside of North America. Ideally with soft measuring tape and another person taking the measurements while you stand in neutral. If you do not have soft measuring tape, you can use non-stretchy string or yarn wrapped around a ruler. Measuring tape should be wrapped firmly around the body while taking measurements. Check out the Leather Care page linked in the footer! What kind of leather do you use? All pieces are made from latigo or vegetable tanned leather, unless otherwise noted. I source my leather from Italy and California. Latigo is known for is durability and water resistance, while veg tan weathers beautifully. What materials are your hardware? Spill currently uses mostly stainless steel, solid brass, and nickel or brass plated steel. A few hardware pieces are made from nickel-free alums or powder-coated steel. Earrings are made with 100% sterling silver. All of my rivets are nickel free. I am in the process of trying to switch over to entirely stainless steel, solid brass and sterling, but it is an expensive switch that requires a lot of extra sourcing research. If you are concerned about nickel allergies, please contact me directly, there is usually a way I can work with it. Researching hardware for harnesses is where most of my unpaid labor for Spill goes. It is a tricky world as things are not often as they seem: Brass will have nickel in the finish or something labeled "nickel finish" will actually be nickel-free. Many suppliers have a limited to no idea of if their hardware is hypoallergenic or not. Sometimes things that are "nickel-free" still have enough trace nickel to trigger someone if they have a severe sensitivity. Spill does not offer vegan leather for non-custom designs. Most vegan leathers are plastic and far more unsustainable than livestock leathers. When I have more capacity and resources I would love to source a vegan leather than is plant-based, workable, and compares in sustainability to animal leather. Leatherwear is not driving the cattle industry and there are many ways to invest in a more eco-ethical world, I do not believe that consistently offering a plastic option is one of them.
